In ‘Promised Land,’ ‘Too Much Monkey Business’ and ‘Brown Eyed Handsome Man,’ he celebrated and satirized America’s opportunities and class tensions. His rock ’n’ roll was a music of joyful lusts, laughed-off tensions and gleefully shattered icons.
