The logic that maximizing GDP, which is just the summation of all goods and services exchanged for money, will somehow lead to a better world for all is so obviously flawed, yet it continues to be held in high regard by almost every mainstream economist.

As I sit here at my desk writing, I am listening to the Longines Symphonette Society’s version of My Favorite Things. You may think this is a hyper-hip new group that one finds on KCRW. But it is not. It is as easy listening as it sounds. It amazes me that I can find such a wealth of easy listening on Spotify. Why would hipsters listen to The Melachrino Strings and Orchestra’s Music for Romance? They may be cool and have beards, bangs, and beanies, but I’m sure even hipsters entertain. And perhaps they would prefer the dulcite tones of Lawrence Welk during dinner rather than STRFKR.On that note, I pulled out some of my favorite records. It’s easy to make fun of the design of these, but is that really fair? Yes, they have sexual overtones and everyone has a doped up rufie and druggy look. But consider the audience. These records were played during dinner or cocktail parties. Perhaps the goal was a swingers type situation with guests. Then they are perfect. Or, one’s date might put one on the hi-fi, turn the lights low, ply a date with alcohol and… Again, the form and content address the message.I will admit, I love the A Man and A Woman cover.

Terry Klemm and Reg Bell were two of the biggest names in Victorian board-making throughout the ’60s and ’70s and together ran one of Australia’s most respected, innovative labels, namely Klemm-Bell Surfboards.
And now an overdue reunion of surfers, workers, fans and Terry and Reg themselves is on the way – and already over 100 Klemm-Bell boards are registered along with many of the KB shapers, glassers and teamriders throughout the years.
Many attendees haven’t seen each other for 25-30 years so it should be one amazing day – even got Murray Walding’s band the Southside Hodads playing.
Everybody is welcome – Sunday January 8, 10am to 4pm, 40-58 Melbourne Rd. Williamstown Vicco

Most skaters know the commonly accepted story of how modern skateboarding was invented and popularized: In the 1950s, surfers who wanted to experience the sensation of riding waves on concrete started to disassemble roller skates and attach them to wooden boards.Surf shops and manufacturers began producing skateboards to capitalize on this newly forming market in the early 1960s. These boards looked like small surfboards.

Around 2005 or 2006, I spotted something on craigslist that I wanted and agreed to meet up at the guy’s house. When he told me his address, I was shocked – it was a less than 3 minute drive from my house and he had, to say the least, a large and impressive collection of guitars and amplifiers. This was pretty odd to find in our neighborhood and we hit it off immediately.I don’t recall exactly what I was buying (or selling), but what I do remember is that he kept putting guitars in my hands to check out, many of which weren’t even for sale – we were just geeking out and he was happy to share.I recall two guitars from that day that really moved me: one was a 1982 AVRI Fullerton 50’s Strat that must have been played for hours in damp & smokey bars nightly for years – it was far more beat than most actual 50’s Strats I’ve ever seen. The second one was a 1955 Gibson ES-295 that had been refinished in Sonic Blue:
